Short answer. Square jaw reduction surgery in Korea removes or reshapes jawbone, usually through incisions inside the mouth under general anesthesia, and it only helps when bone, not the chewing muscle, makes the lower face wide. The price moves with how many bones are cut (angle, chin, cheekbones), the anesthesia, the nights in the clinic and the follow-ups, so get each line in writing; this guide prints no price bands because we found no dated, non-clinic source for them.
The jaw you see in a photo is three things stacked on top of each other. Bone, muscle, and fat. Only one of them needs a saw.
In Seoul the same consult is sold under five names: jaw reduction, square jaw surgery, jawline shave, V-line, facial contouring. A Kakao chat sends a price tile for "V-line." Nobody in the chat has seen your CT. The coordinator asks for a deposit before a surgeon has said which bone is wide, or whether bone is the problem at all.
If you remember one test, remember this. Clench your teeth in a mirror and feel the corner of your jaw. If a firm block rises under your fingers, muscle is a big part of the width, and the surgery alone may not give you the photo you want. If nothing moves and the corner stays sharp, it is more likely bone, and that is the conversation this guide is about.
Is a square jaw bone or muscle?
Often both, which is why the order of appointments matters. The chewing muscle, the masseter, sits on the outside of the jaw angle. When it is thick, toxin can thin it over weeks. One Korean series found the muscle about 31% thinner at three months after toxin, and the authors treated muscle bulk and bone as separate problems. (ref. 5) That appointment has its own guide: jaw Botox is not a jawline. Fat under the chin is a third problem with its own tools, covered in our fat-dissolving injection guide.
Bone is what is left when the muscle relaxes. A prominent jaw angle flares out below the ear. A broad chin makes the lower face read square from the front. Wide cheekbones widen the middle of the face and can make a narrow jaw look heavier. Each of these is a different cut.
A surgeon tells them apart with your face in the room and a scan on the screen. The published Korean series plan the bone cuts on panoramic X-rays and 3D CT, then measure the change on follow-up scans. (ref. 1, 2) A photo on WhatsApp can start the conversation. It cannot finish it.
What is the difference between angle reduction, V-line and cheekbone reduction?
They are different operations that are often sold together. Mandible angle reduction cuts the flared corner below the ear. A "V-line" usually means the cut is carried forward along the lower border toward the chin, sometimes with the outer layer of bone shaved, so the face narrows from the front as well as the side. (ref. 2) Genioplasty moves or narrows the chin itself. Zygoma reduction, also called reduction malarplasty, cuts and repositions the cheekbone and its arch. (ref. 1, 3)
Most of the work happens through the mouth, so the scars are usually inside. Cheekbone reduction may add a small incision near the ear. (ref. 1) All of it is done under general anesthesia. (ref. 1, 2)
The table below sets out what each operation targets and what published Korean data say about its most common problems. These are single case series and one pooled analysis, not a promise for your surgeon or your face.
| Operation | What it changes | What it does not change | Numbers from the published literature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mandible angle reduction (often with outer cortex shaving) | Flared jaw corner, side profile | Masseter muscle bulk, chin fat, loose skin | 588 patients, one surgeon: numbness of chin, lip or gum in 6.46%, lasting past a year in 1.53%; infection in 3.23% within two weeks (ref. 1) |
| V-line (long curved cut from angle toward chin) | Lower-face width from the front and side | Cheek width, skin quality | 243 patients: temporary lip and chin numbness in 6.2%, settled in 3–6 months; limited mouth opening 3.3% (resolved within three weeks); soft-tissue sagging 4.5% (ref. 2) |
| Genioplasty (chin narrowing or sliding) | Chin width, length, projection | Jaw angle | Numbness was more frequent in the patients who also had chin surgery (ref. 1) |
| Zygoma reduction (reduction malarplasty) | Cheekbone body and arch, mid-face width | Lower jaw | 14 studies, 3,149 cases: temporary numbness 5.8%, cheek drooping 2.8%, bone not knitting 2.2%, asymmetry 1.8%, facial nerve injury 0.9% (ref. 3) |
Rates come from cited case series and a meta-analysis (data published 2014–2017). They describe those patients, not a forecast. Not a Peep recommendation.
Two lines in that table get skipped in chats. Numbness is common enough to hear about in the consult, and the long-lasting kind should be a named risk on your consent form. Sagging is the quieter one. Take bone away and the soft tissue on it has less to hang from. (ref. 2, 3)
How long do you need to stay in Seoul after jaw reduction surgery?
Plan around the surgeon's checks, not the flight deal. In the large Korean series, patients spent one to two days in the clinic after surgery and wore a bulky compression dressing for three to five days, followed by an elastic face mask. (ref. 1, 2) A drain, when used, stayed about a day. (ref. 2) Follow-up in the 588-patient series averaged fourteen weeks, which is longer than any vacation, so ask how the clinic will see you after you leave. (ref. 1)
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons suggests waiting about seven to ten days after facial surgery before a long flight, because surgery and long flights each raise the risk of blood clots. (ref. 4) Bone surgery under general anesthesia sits at the serious end of that range. Ask your surgeon for their window and book the return after it, not before.
The days are ordinary and slow. Swelling peaks early and fades over weeks. Food is soft at first, because the incisions are inside your mouth. In one series a few patients could not open fully for up to three weeks. (ref. 2) Lip or chin numbness may fade over months. (ref. 1, 2) You fly home in the middle of the story.
How is jaw reduction surgery priced in Korea?
By the bone, then by everything around the bone. We could not find a dated, non-clinic source for Korean jaw-surgery prices, so this guide prints no ranges. What we can tell you is how the quote is built, so two quotes can be read side by side.
Count the bones first. Angle only, angle plus chin, or angle plus chin plus cheekbones are different operations with different operating times, and the published series report them as separate groups. (ref. 1) A "V-line package" price that does not say which cuts are inside it is not a price yet.
Then the lines around it. Who gives the general anesthesia and whether a dedicated anesthesiologist stays in the room. The CT scans, pre-op and post-op. Nights in the clinic. Compression garments, drains, medicines, stitch checks. Follow-up visits, and what happens if you need one from abroad. Revision terms, in writing. Our plastic surgery cost guide walks through a full quote line by line.
One 2026 change applies here too. Korea's VAT refund for foreign tourists' cosmetic surgery only covered treatment received by 31 December 2025 and was not extended. (ref. 6, 7) Ask whether VAT is inside the number before you compare it with a quote from 2025.
What the saw will not do
It will not thin a muscle. If clenching changes your jaw a lot, a bone cut leaves that bulk in place. The toxin research treats muscle bulk and bone as separate problems for exactly that reason. (ref. 5)
It will not tighten skin or remove fat. Taking bone away can make loose skin look looser, which is why sagging appears in the complication lists. (ref. 2, 3) If your concern is a soft jowl or a fuller neck rather than a wide corner, ask whether a lift or a fat procedure is the real conversation. Our SMAS vs deep plane facelift guide explains the lift side.
It will not fix your bite. The 588-patient series only included patients whose teeth met normally. (ref. 1) An underbite is a two-jaw, orthodontic question.
And it is not small. These are bone operations near the nerve that gives feeling to your lip and chin, done under general anesthesia. Ask who is operating, check their specialty, and request the operating-room camera recording if you want one. Our guide to whether plastic surgery in Korea is safe shows how to check all three from abroad.
The message that books the right consult
Send this before any deposit:
- Three photos: front, both sides, relaxed and clenched.
- "Which part of my width do you think is bone, muscle, or fat?"
- "Which bones would you cut: angle, chin, cheekbones? Please list them."
- "Who operates, and what is their specialty? Who gives the anesthesia?"
- "How many nights in the clinic, when are the checks, and when can I fly?"
- "What is the plan if I am numb, swollen on one side, or unhappy after I go home?"
A clinic that answers the first question before it sees a scan is guessing. A clinic that answers the last one in writing is planning.
Quick FAQ
What is square jaw reduction surgery? Square jaw reduction surgery removes or reshapes part of the lower jawbone so the lower face looks narrower. In Korea it usually means cutting the flared jaw angle, often with shaving of the outer bone layer, through incisions inside the mouth under general anesthesia. (ref. 1, 2) It treats bone, not the chewing muscle.
Is V-line surgery the same as jaw reduction? Not exactly. Jaw angle reduction trims the corner below the ear. V-line surgery in Korea usually carries the cut forward along the jaw toward the chin, and may include chin narrowing, so the face narrows from the front too. (ref. 2) Ask the clinic to list which cuts the word "V-line" includes in your quote.
Is jawline shave surgery the same as jaw reduction? Often it is part of it. "Shaving" usually means grinding down the outer layer of the jawbone, which surgeons commonly combine with cutting the jaw angle to narrow the face from the front. (ref. 1, 2) Ask whether your plan is shaving only, an angle cut, or both, because the operations and recovery differ.
How do I know if my square jaw is bone or muscle? Clench your teeth and feel the angle of your jaw. If a firm muscle rises, the masseter is contributing; if the shape does not change, bone is more likely. A surgeon confirms it in person and on X-ray or CT, which is how published Korean series plan the cuts. (ref. 1, 2)
Should I try jaw Botox before jaw reduction surgery? If the muscle is part of the width, many people try toxin first, because it is reversible and needs no anesthesia. One study found the masseter about 31% thinner at three months. (ref. 5) It will not change bone. Our jaw Botox guide covers that appointment.
Is jaw reduction surgery in Korea safe? It is a real operation with known risks, done often in Korea. In one 588-patient series the most common problem was numbness (6.46%), with 1.53% still numb after a year, and infection occurred in 3.23% within two weeks. (ref. 1) Safety depends on the surgeon, the anesthesia and the aftercare; see our safety guide.
Will I lose feeling in my lip or chin after jaw reduction? You may, usually for a while. Published Korean series report temporary lip or chin numbness in about 6% of patients, mostly settling within months, and a small share lasting longer than a year. (ref. 1, 2) Ask your surgeon how they protect the nerve and how often their patients stay numb.
What are the risks of cheekbone reduction surgery? A meta-analysis of 3,149 reduction malarplasty cases found temporary numbness in 5.8%, cheek drooping in 2.8%, bone that did not knit in 2.2%, asymmetry and limited mouth opening in 1.8% each, and facial nerve injury in 0.9%. (ref. 3) Ask how the cut bone will be fixed in place.
Can jaw reduction cause sagging? It can. Removing bone leaves the soft tissue less support. One V-line series reported sagging in 4.5% of patients, later treated with liposuction, and drooping is a listed risk after cheekbone reduction. (ref. 2, 3) Your skin quality and age matter; ask about it directly.
How long is recovery after jaw reduction surgery? The first week is the hardest: one to two days in the clinic, a compression dressing for three to five days, soft food, and swelling. (ref. 1, 2) Stiffness and numbness can take weeks to months to settle, and the final shape takes longer. Your surgeon's timeline wins.
How long should I stay in Korea after jaw surgery? Plan at least until your surgeon's main checks are done and you are past the window they set for flying. ASPS suggests about seven to ten days after facial surgery before a long flight. (ref. 4) Book the return flight after the surgeon names the date.
What can I eat after jaw reduction surgery? Soft, cool food at first, because the incisions are inside the mouth and the jaw is stiff. Your clinic will give a diet sheet; follow it over anything online. Keep the mouth clean as instructed, since infection is one of the commonly reported problems. (ref. 1)
Are there scars after jaw reduction surgery? Angle and V-line cuts are usually made through incisions inside the mouth, so there is no facial scar in most cases. (ref. 1, 2) Cheekbone reduction may add a small incision near the ear. (ref. 1) Ask where every incision will be before you sign.
How much does square jaw reduction surgery cost in Korea? It depends on which bones are cut, the anesthesia, nights in the clinic, scans and follow-ups. We have not found a dated, non-clinic source for Korean price ranges, so this guide prints none. Ask for an itemized quote and compare it line by line using our cost guide.
Is VAT refunded on jaw surgery in Korea in 2026? No. Korea's VAT refund for foreign tourists' cosmetic surgery covered treatment received by 31 December 2025 and was not extended. (ref. 6, 7) Ask whether the quoted price includes VAT.
Does jaw reduction surgery fix an underbite? No. Contouring surgery reshapes the outline of bone with the bite left as it is; the large Korean series included only patients whose teeth met normally. (ref. 1) An underbite or crossbite needs an orthodontic and two-jaw surgery assessment, which is a different operation.
Who should not have jaw reduction surgery? Anyone whose width is mainly muscle or fat, anyone with a bite problem that needs orthodontic care, and anyone who cannot stay long enough for the early checks. Smokers and people with bleeding or clotting problems need a frank talk first. A surgeon who says yes before seeing a scan has skipped a step.
What should I ask a Korean clinic before booking jaw reduction? Ask which bones they would cut, whether they reviewed a CT, who operates and their specialty, who gives anesthesia, how many nights you stay, when you can fly, and what happens if you are numb or uneven after you go home. Get the answers in writing before a deposit.
Medical note
This article is for general education and is not medical advice, a diagnosis, or a promise of outcome. It prints no prices because we found no dated, non-clinic source for Korean jaw-surgery ranges; ask the clinic for an itemized quote. Complication rates are quoted from published studies and describe those patients, not your result. Procedures are named to explain categories, not to endorse a clinic. If you have a bleeding or clotting disorder, a bite problem, or a medical condition that affects anesthesia, speak to a qualified clinician before facial bone surgery.
