Short answer. If you hold a US, UK, Canadian or Australian passport, Korea's entry requirements for a short visit in 2026 are a valid passport, no K-ETA (that exemption runs through 31 December 2026, KST), and a free online e-Arrival card submitted within three days before you land. For trips from 1 January 2027, plan on needing a K-ETA unless Korea announces another extension, and re-check k-eta.go.kr before you book.
The form is the easy part. The first day is where people lose time.
A first trip for a procedure is a normal trip with a narrower margin. You land at Incheon, your consult in Gangnam is at four, and the clinic's coordinator wants a Kakao message when you arrive. Your US phone plan is roaming at airport rates. The taxi app asks for a Korean number. Your hair tool is 110 volts. None of it is dangerous. All of it eats the hours you planned to rest.
If you remember one test, remember this. Before you fly, make sure you can do four things on your phone without hotel Wi-Fi: show your e-Arrival QR, message the clinic, open a map in English, and call a taxi. If any one fails, fix it at home, not at the arrivals hall.
Do Americans need a visa or K-ETA for South Korea?
Not for a short visit in 2026. Korea normally asks visa-free visitors to get a K-ETA, an online travel authorization. Since 2023, travelers from 22 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, have been temporarily exempt, and the Ministry of Justice extended that exemption to 31 December 2026, Korean time. (ref. 1, 2, 5) You can still apply for a K-ETA voluntarily; the fee is 10,000 won, it is non-refundable, and the official site asks you to apply at least 72 hours before departure. (ref. 1, 3) The main benefit of having one is skipping the arrival card. (ref. 1)
The date matters for winter trips. As of 6 October 2026, the official notices still end the exemption on 31 December 2026, and we found no announcement of a 2027 extension. (ref. 1, 2) If you land on or after 1 January 2027, or you are booking a January recovery stay now, check k-eta.go.kr before you buy flights and again a week before you leave. Apply only on the official site or app.
A visa-free entry is for short visits such as tourism. How long you may stay depends on your passport, so confirm it on the official Korean visa portal if your recovery plan runs long.
What is the Korea e-Arrival card, and do I need one?
Yes, if you are K-ETA exempt. From 1 January 2026, the paper arrival card was replaced by a free online e-Arrival card for most foreign visitors. (ref. 4, 5) Submit it at e-arrivalcard.go.kr within three days before arrival, counting the arrival day. (ref. 5) It asks for passport details, your flights and where you are staying. (ref. 4) Save the confirmation on your phone.
Two details trip people up. Travelers who hold a valid K-ETA are excluded from the e-Arrival card. (ref. 4) And the address you give should be where you actually sleep, which on a recovery trip may change. Put the first hotel and keep the clinic's address in your notes in Korean.
Customs is a separate line. If you carry more than US$10,000 in cash, cheques or other means of payment combined, you must declare it on arrival, and the certificate cannot be issued after you leave the immigration area. (ref. 6) Do not carry a surgery's worth of cash. Ask the clinic how it takes payment, and read our cost guide for what a quote and a deposit should cover.
What should I sort out before the flight?
The table is the short version. Each line is something that is hard to fix on day one.
| Item | What to do | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Entry (2026, US/UK/CA/AU) | Valid passport; no K-ETA needed through 31 Dec 2026 KST; re-check for 2027 trips | (ref. 1, 2) |
| e-Arrival card | Free; submit within 3 days before arrival; skip it only if you hold a valid K-ETA | (ref. 4, 5) |
| Optional K-ETA | 10,000 won, non-refundable, apply 72+ hours before departure | (ref. 3) |
| Prescription medicines | Narcotic or psychoactive medicines need an MFDS permit before entry; online application available | (ref. 7) |
| Cash | Declare over US$10,000 in total on arrival | (ref. 6) |
| Power | 220 V, 60 Hz, two round pins; adapters sold at airports and convenience stores | (ref. 8) |
Rules as published by the cited Korean government sites, checked 6 October 2026. Re-check before you travel.
Medicines deserve their own line. If you take a controlled medicine at home, such as some sleeping pills, ADHD medicines or strong painkillers, Korea requires a permit from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety before you bring it in, whatever your nationality. (ref. 7) Apply well ahead. Bring the rest of your prescriptions in their original boxes with a copy of the prescription, and tell your surgeon what you take.
Phone, apps and money
Get data first. Korea's carriers run roaming centers at Incheon and Gimpo, where you can buy a SIM card or rent a pocket Wi-Fi, and physical SIM cards are also sold at major convenience store chains. (ref. 9) An eSIM bought online and set up with a QR code before you fly means you land connected; check that your phone supports eSIM first. (ref. 9) Some plans include a local number. That number helps with clinic calls, delivery orders and apps that verify by text.
Then the apps that work for visitors. Naver Map works in English and has had multilingual guides since 2018. Since 4 June 2026, visitors can verify with a foreign passport to book, order and pay through Naver Map without a Korean phone number. (ref. 10) For taxis, Kakao Mobility's k.ride app was built for foreign visitors: English interface, sign-up without a Korean account, and payment with overseas cards. (ref. 11) Add a translation app with a camera mode for aftercare sheets and pharmacy labels.
Plan to pay mostly by card, with a little cash. Load a transport card. Tmoney cards are sold and topped up at convenience stores and subway machines, work on the subway, buses and many taxis, and WOWPASS is a foreigner-only card that also exchanges currency at kiosks. (ref. 12) Keep some won in cash for top-ups and small shops. The Korea Travel Helpline, 1330, answers in English. (ref. 12)
Plugs are simple. Korea uses 220 volts at 60 hertz with two round pins. (ref. 8) Phone and laptop chargers usually handle both voltages and only need an adapter. Some hair tools do not, so check the label before you plug one in.
How do you pack for recovery, not just for Seoul?
Pack for the person who leaves the clinic, not the one who lands. Tops that button or zip at the front, so nothing goes over a swollen face or a fresh dressing. A neck pillow for sleeping upright. Sunglasses, a soft hat, and a mask for the ride back. Lip balm and a refillable water bottle. Loose layers, because Seoul autumn mornings are cool and clinics are warm.
Then the paperwork. A printed page with your surgeon's name, the procedure, the clinic's address in Korean, your medicines and allergies. The consent and the quote, saved offline. Your home doctor's contact. Ask the clinic for your operative and discharge notes before you fly; you will want them at home.
Plan the flight around the surgeon's window, not the airline's sale. Each of our procedure guides gives its own stay length, and the Korean skin treatments guide notes which treatments fit a short trip. Our guide to whether plastic surgery in Korea is safe covers what records to bring home and where foreign patients can get help.

US citizens are exempt from the K-ETA through 31 December 2026, Korean time. (ref. 1, 4) Check the official sites again before travel, because rules can change.
Do I need a K-ETA to visit Korea in 2026? Not if you hold a passport from one of the 22 exempt countries and regions, which include the US, UK, Canada and Australia; the exemption runs through 31 December 2026, KST. (ref. 1, 2) Other visa-free nationalities generally need a K-ETA. Check your nationality on k-eta.go.kr.
Will the K-ETA exemption be extended into 2027? As of 6 October 2026, the official notices end it on 31 December 2026, and we found no announcement of an extension. (ref. 1, 2) For trips on or after 1 January 2027, plan on applying for a K-ETA at least 72 hours before departure unless k-eta.go.kr says otherwise. (ref. 3)
How much does a K-ETA cost? The official fee is 10,000 won per person, and it is not refunded if your plans change or the application is refused. (ref. 1, 3) Apply only at k-eta.go.kr or the official app.
Should I get a K-ETA even if I am exempt? Only if you want to skip the e-Arrival card. Exempt travelers may apply voluntarily and pay the fee, and K-ETA holders do not need to submit the arrival card. (ref. 1, 4) For most single trips, the free e-Arrival card is enough.
What is the Korea e-Arrival card? It is the free online arrival form that replaced the paper card for most foreign visitors from 1 January 2026. (ref. 4, 5) You submit it at e-arrivalcard.go.kr within three days before arrival with your passport, flight and address details.
When should I fill in the Korea e-Arrival card? Within three days before you arrive, counting the arrival day. (ref. 5) Doing it the night before your flight is fine; doing it on the plane depends on Wi-Fi. Save the confirmation offline.
Do Americans need a visa for South Korea for medical treatment? For a short visit, most US travelers enter visa-free, with no K-ETA needed in 2026 and an e-Arrival card. (ref. 1, 4) If your plan involves a long stay, check how long your passport allows on the official Korean visa portal before you book.
Can I bring my prescription medicines into Korea? Usually yes, for personal use, ideally in original packaging with a prescription copy. Medicines that contain narcotic or psychoactive substances need a permit from Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety before entry, regardless of nationality, and the application can be made online. (ref. 7)
Do I need to declare cash when entering Korea? Yes, if you carry more than US$10,000 in total in cash, cheques or similar means of payment. You declare it to Customs on arrival, and the certificate cannot be issued after you leave immigration. (ref. 6) Failing to declare can bring fines.
Should I get an eSIM or a SIM card in Korea? Either works. An eSIM set up before you fly means data on landing, if your phone supports it; a physical SIM can be bought at airport roaming centers and major convenience stores. (ref. 9) A plan with a local number helps with clinic calls and text verification.
Which map app works in Korea? Naver Map works in English. Since 4 June 2026, visitors can verify with a foreign passport to book, order and pay through Naver Map without a Korean phone number. (ref. 10) Save your clinic's address in Korean so you can paste it in.
Can tourists use Kakao T in Korea? Kakao Mobility's k.ride app is the version built for foreign visitors, with English, sign-up without a Korean account, and overseas card payment. (ref. 11) That makes a ride back from a clinic possible without a Korean number.
What plug adapter do I need for Korea? Korea uses 220 volts at 60 hertz with sockets for two round pins. (ref. 8) Most phone and laptop chargers are dual-voltage and only need an adapter; adapters are sold at airports and convenience stores. (ref. 8) Check hair tools for 220 V before you use them.
Is it better to use cash or card in Korea? Plan on paying mostly by card, and keep some won in cash for transport-card top-ups and small shops; Tmoney cards are sold and reloaded at convenience stores and subway machines, and WOWPASS kiosks also exchange currency. (ref. 12) Ask your clinic in advance how it takes payment.
What should I pack for recovery in Seoul? Front-opening tops, a neck pillow, sunglasses, a soft hat, a mask, lip balm and loose layers. Add a printed page with your surgeon's name, procedure, medicines and allergies, and the clinic's address in Korean. Follow your clinic's list for anything medical.
How early should I arrive in Seoul before a consult? A day earlier than you think. A long-haul flight, immigration and the ride into Seoul take most of an arrival day, and a consult is a bad place to be jet-lagged. Book the consult for your second day if you can, and keep the surgery date flexible until it is confirmed.
Who can I call for help in English in Korea? The Korea Travel Helpline, 1330, answers travel questions in English and several other languages. (ref. 12) For problems with medical care, our safety guide lists where foreign patients can get help.
