The number that gets you to book a thread lift is rarely the number that holds your face.
Search "thread lift Korea cost" and a desk will send a figure that looks like a decision. A non-surgical lift at a fraction of a facelift. The figure is often real. It is almost never the same operation as the facelift it is being compared with. A thread pulls tissue along a suture for a while. A facelift moves a deeper layer and takes skin. People do not overpay the thread in the operating room. They overpay the comparison.
If you remember one rule, remember this. A thread price without the count is not a price. Six threads and twenty threads are different procedures, different weekends, and different faces.

What you are actually buying
A thread lift places dissolvable sutures under the skin to shift tissue and, on some products, to stir collagen while they dissolve. PDO, PLLA, and PCL are the families you will see on Korean menus. Mint, Ultra V, and a dozen other names are brands inside those families. Asking for the brand and asking for a lifted jaw are different requests.
The material sets a clock, not a result. PDO is usually absorbed in about six to eight months, PLLA in about a year, PCL in about a year to a year and a half. (ref. 4) A slower thread costs more. It is not a longer lift. Mint, the name on most Seoul tiles, is a molded PDO cog thread from the Korean maker HansBiomed, approved by the MFDS for facial soft-tissue fixation. (ref. 5) The approval is about the device. It says nothing about how long your jaw holds.
The lift you feel in the chair is the pull. The lift you still have next year is whatever collagen that pull left behind, plus the fact that you did not gain weight and your tissues did not slide back. Threads do not stop time. A desk that calls them a facelift is selling a feeling.
The price is a count in disguise
Clinic guides in 2026 put a common Seoul thread package roughly around 1,200 to 3,500 dollars, sometimes quoted as about 1,500,000 to 4,500,000 won. That is not a Peep quote. The low end is often a small count in a small area. The high end is more threads, a named brand, and a face rather than a jawline only.
Many menus price by the line, so the tile is a unit price, not a plan. Clinic guides in 2026 cluster roughly here. Again, not a Peep quote.
- Barbed PDO cog thread: often about 50,000 to 140,000 won a line.
- Molded cog thread such as Mint: often about 100,000 to 200,000 won a line.
- Jawline or lower face, about 4 to 12 lines: commonly 450,000 to 2,000,000 won.
- Full face with slower-absorbing PCL or PLLA: commonly 1,500,000 to 3,500,000 won, sometimes more.
Do the arithmetic before the consult. A four-line tile that becomes eight lines in the room has doubled without anyone lying.
A US quote for "thread lift" is often higher for a similar count. The comparison that misleads is the one against a surgical facelift, which clinic guides talk about from roughly 7,500 dollars up for a full SMAS plan. Those are not two prices for one operation. They are two operations.
What the first number leaves out: the count, the area, whether the threads are cogged or smooth, the consult fee for a visitor, and the touch-up someone offers at eight weeks. A promotion that looks half price is often half the threads.
VAT is the quiet line. Korea's 10 percent refund for foreign visitors' cosmetic procedures covered treatment received by 31 December 2025, and it was not extended. (ref. 9, 10) Many menus still list VAT separately. Ask whether the won figure already includes it.
Who should not use a thread as a substitute
If the pinch test on your jaw and neck comes away with spare skin, a thread will not spend that skin. It can sharpen a mild slide. It cannot do the job of a deep-plane or SMAS lift. Booking it because the facelift quote scared you is how people pay twice: once for the thread, later for the operation they needed.
Age is a weak sorter. A 40-year-old with a heavy neck can be a poor thread case. A 55-year-old with mild slide and elastic skin can be a fair one. The mirror is the test. The birthday is not.
A quicker version of that test: put two fingertips just in front of your ears and push the skin up and back by about the width of a pencil. If that small move gives you the face you wanted, a thread is in the conversation. If you need your whole palm, or the neck still hangs, you are describing a facelift, and a thread only rents a few months of it.
Age matters more for the risk than for the result. In a pooled review of 26 studies, patients over 50 had more dimpling, about 16 percent against about 6 percent, and more infection. (ref. 7)
What the week looks like
Threads are not a lunch, even when the appointment is short. Dimples, puckering, and a tight smile are common in the first days. Most of that settles over one to two weeks. You can often fly sooner than after a facelift. You should not book a photoshoot for the next morning. The result people judge is the one still there at three months, not the pull they saw in the clinic mirror.
The common side effects are ordinary, not rare. In one study of lower-face threads, about four in five patients bruised, for about four days on average, and soreness averaged about 4 out of 10 for about three days. (ref. 6) The same pooled review put swelling at about 35 percent, dimpling about 10, numbness or tingling about 6, a thread you can see or feel about 4, and infection or a thread working its way out about 2 each. (ref. 7) Most dimples settle within about a week. A hard lump or spreading redness is a call to the doctor, not the group chat.
Threads dissolve. Many people talk about a useful change for six to eighteen months, then a softer face. Anyone who promises a surgical timeline for a suture is talking past the product.
The studies are less generous than the ads. In a blinded study of absorbable barbed threads, reviewers saw a mild lift up to three months, and 56 percent of patients showed no lift at twelve months compared with where they started. (ref. 6) A systematic review found very limited durability in nearly every study it included, and the two positive ones were funded by thread makers. (ref. 8) Swelling flatters every fresh thread face. If you like the result, price it as maintenance, not as a one-time fix.
The message that books the right thread
Send the complaint, not the product. "My lower cheeks have dropped a little and I want a cleaner jawline" can be assessed. "Mint lift" cannot.
Then ask three things the tile never answers. Who places the threads, by name. What happens if a dimple or a pulled line shows up on day three. Who sees you while you are still in Seoul. Book the threads early in the trip, so the check happens before the flight, not after it.
Quick FAQ
Is a thread lift a mini facelift? No. A thread shifts tissue along a suture. A facelift repositions a deeper layer and removes skin. The nickname is the sales tool.
How much is it in Seoul? Clinic guides in 2026 cluster packages around 1,200 to 3,500 dollars, depending on count and brand. A jaw-only promotion can sit under that. A full face with a named cog sits at the top. Not a Peep quote.
Why do prices vary so much? Count, brand, area, and whether a visitor fee is inside the number. Six threads are not twenty threads with a smaller font.
How long does it last? Often talked about as six to eighteen months of visible change. The independent studies are shorter. In one blinded study, 56 percent of patients showed no lift at twelve months. (ref. 6) The suture dissolves. Collagen, if it shows up, is not a guarantee of the same face next year.
Does it hurt? The appointment uses local anesthetic. Soreness, tightness, and odd smiles for several days are common. That is not a complication by itself. Asymmetry that stays is a reason to go back.
Can I fly the next day? Many people do. Swelling and puckering are why a next-day flight is a gamble if you have meetings. Ask the desk for their own flight rule.
What is a cog thread? A thread with barbs that grip tissue. Smooth threads are a different job, often more about texture than shift. The quote should say which.
Is Mint better? Mint is a brand, not a result. It is a molded PDO cog thread made in Korea by HansBiomed and approved by the MFDS for facial soft-tissue fixation. (ref. 5) The count, the direction, and the face matter more than the logo on the box.
Can threads fix a double chin? They can sharpen a mild slide. A fat pad under the chin is a different tool. A heavy neck with spare skin is closer to surgery.
What if a thread pokes or dimples? Tell the clinic. Early puckering often settles. A thread that is visible or painful after two weeks needs a look, not a filter.
Can I do threads and filler the same day? Some desks do. Swelling then belongs to both, and you cannot tell which one you dislike. Spacing them makes the bill clearer and the blame clearer.
Is it safe before a real facelift later? Often yes, after the threads have settled or dissolved. Tell the next surgeon. Old threads change the tissue they feel.
Who is a poor candidate? Very loose skin, a heavy neck, an expectation of a surgical jawline, or a flight that cannot absorb a week of puckering. Pregnancy, an active skin infection on the face, and a history of keloid scars are reasons to wait or skip. Anyone on blood thinners needs a doctor's plan first.
Do men book this? Yes. Counts often run higher. The goal is usually that a colleague cannot tell.
What should the quote list? Brand, material, count, areas, whether a touch-up is included, and the fee in won. "Thread lift, full face" is not a list.
Will I look pulled? A hard pull in week one is common and not the result. A pull that still looks like strings at a month is a reason to be seen.
Can it replace Ultherapy or Thermage? No. Devices heat tissue. Threads move it. Some people do both. They are separate bills. Order matters too. Many doctors run the device first, or wait some weeks after the threads, because heat and fresh threads are an awkward pair.
Is the cheap package a scam? Not always. It is often fewer threads. Compare the count before you call it a deal.
What about VAT? The 10 percent refund for foreign visitors' cosmetic procedures covered treatment received by 31 December 2025 and was not extended. (ref. 9, 10) Ask whether the won figure includes VAT before you compare clinics.
Should I do threads because I am not ready for surgery? Only if your skin still matches what a thread can hold. Using it as a cheaper facelift is the expensive way to delay the operation.
Does a PCL or PLLA thread last longer than PDO? It dissolves more slowly. PDO usually goes in about six to eight months, PLLA in about a year, PCL in about a year to a year and a half. (ref. 4) In most studies the visible lift is shorter than any of those numbers. The slower thread is a higher price, not a promise of a longer lift.
Can a thread be removed if I hate it? Partly. A misplaced or poking thread can often be taken out, especially early. Once tissue has grown around the barbs, removing a whole thread is harder. The rest dissolves on its own. Waiting is often the honest answer.
What should I avoid after a thread lift? Rubbing, facial massage, and hard pressure on the face. In one study, patients were told to skip high-impact sport for a week, and dental work, saunas, massage, and heat on the area for at least a month. (ref. 6) Book the dentist around the threads.
How long should I stay in Seoul? The appointment is about an hour. Four to seven days after it lets the clinic see you once any dimple or pulled line shows. If threads are the only reason for the trip, the flight is the expensive part.
Can threads fix smile lines or marionette lines? They can soften the shadow a little when a cheek that slid down is deepening the fold. They do not add volume or erase a deep crease. Lost volume is a filler question. Loose skin is a surgical one. Ask which one you have before you buy lines for it.
